How to get your remodeling company mentioned by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity

How do ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity choose sources?

Each one searches for pages, reads the ones it finds, and names the sources it used. Google sends AI Overviews from its normal search index. ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web when a question needs current information. A business is mentioned when its own pages and listings are easy to find, clearly describe the service and area, and agree with each other.

AssistantHow it finds sources (per its own docs)What a remodeler should do
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeUses Google's search index. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Google says no special optimization, new file or markup is required.Keep the site crawlable and indexed, keep Business Profile current, and write clear text answers on the page.
ChatGPT searchTurns a question into one or more searches, retrieves results, and answers with links. Its answers can include inline citations and a Sources list.Be findable on the open web: your site, your Business Profile, and reputable directories that list your company.
PerplexitySearches the web, summarizes what it finds, and returns numbered citations linking to the original pages.Make each service and town page answer one clear question, with the facts on the page itself.

The common thread is that an assistant can only cite what it can retrieve and verify. A claim that appears only in an image, or that conflicts with your listings, is hard for any of them to use.

Does your Google Business Profile matter for AI answers?

Yes. For local questions, the Business Profile is often the first record an assistant checks. Google's guidance says to keep Business Profile information current, and the profile is where your category, service area, hours and phone number are stored.

Google's Business Profile help describes choosing one primary category, with up to nine additional categories. Google's name rules say the name should reflect the real-world name, and that marketing taglines, phone numbers, URLs and service descriptions are not allowed in the name field. Put your services in the description and on your site, not in the name.

If you work from a home address or go to customers' homes, hide the address and list the service areas by city or ZIP code. Google asks for service areas to be "as specific and accurate as possible."

How much do reviews matter?

Reviews are one of the strongest signals a remodeler can control. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, based on 1,002 US adults, found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. 85% said they were more likely to use a business after reading positive reviews, and 74% look for reviews written in the last three months.

Replies matter too. The same survey found that 89% expect owners to respond to reviews, and 80% are more likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews. Semrush reports that AI Overviews appeared on under a third of searches containing the word "review" a year earlier, and now appear on about 90% of them.

Google's policy forbids paying for reviews, offering incentives for them, or steering only happy customers to leave one. Ask every customer the same way, with no reward attached.

Do consistent name, address and phone details help?

Yes. Assistants compare what they find across sites before they name a company. If your name, address and phone number differ between your website, your Business Profile, and directories, the assistant may treat them as different businesses or skip you.

Use one exact version of your legal or trading name, one street address (or none, if you are a service-area business), and one phone number everywhere. Put the same details in the footer of every page, and in your Business Profile and any directory you control.

Do FAQ pages still help?

Yes, as content. FAQ schema no longer earns a rich result. Google's FAQ structured data documentation says the feature stopped appearing in Google Search starting May 7, 2026, and the documentation was removed on June 15, 2026. An FAQ section still helps, because it answers a real question in plain words, and an assistant can quote that answer.

Write questions the way a homeowner would ask them, such as "How long does a kitchen remodel take in our area?" Answer each one in two or three sentences, then add detail. Keep the answer on the page, not in an image or a PDF.

Does structured data help?

It can help if it is accurate. Google says no special schema.org markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It does recommend that structured data match the text a visitor can see on the page. A LocalBusiness block that repeats your name, address, phone and service area is a reasonable place to start, as long as it matches your Business Profile exactly.

Do not add review markup for reviews that are not on the page, and do not mark up things the page does not show.

Do third-party mentions matter?

They appear to matter, but the evidence is correlational. Ahrefs compared brand web mentions with AI visibility across the top 50 domains in July 2025 and found a Spearman correlation of 0.65 for Google AI Overviews, 0.30 for Perplexity and 0.15 for ChatGPT. Ahrefs itself warns that correlation does not prove cause.

For a remodeler, the practical step is to be listed accurately in the places customers already look: industry associations, local chambers, supplier programs, local news coverage of real projects, and review sites. Do not pay for listings that promise AI placement.

Is llms.txt worth adding?

It is optional and does not help you appear in Google's AI features. Google says you do not need to create new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. John Mueller of Google said on Bluesky in June 2025 that "no AI system currently uses llms.txt." Adding one takes minutes and costs nothing, but do not count it as part of your plan.

What does not work?

Several common tactics waste time or can hurt you:

  • Keyword-stuffed pages. A page that repeats "kitchen remodeler Austin" in every paragraph reads poorly to a person and gives an assistant nothing new to quote. Write for the question a homeowner asks, and support each claim with a detail a reader can check.
  • Fake or bought reviews. They break Google's policy and can get your profile suspended.
  • Duplicate town pages. Ten pages with the same text and a different city name are thin content.
  • Claims with no proof. "Best kitchen remodeler in the county" with no project, price or review behind it gives an assistant nothing to verify.
  • Ignoring your listing. A strong website with an incomplete Business Profile is still a weak local signal.

The Princeton GEO paper reports that GEO methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. That is a benchmark result, not a promise for your site.

Where should you start?

Work through this list in order. Each step is measurable.

  1. Confirm your site is indexed and that your Business Profile is verified and current.
  2. Match your name, address and phone number across the site, the profile and key directories.
  3. Set one primary category and only the additional categories that describe your core work.
  4. Ask recent customers for reviews with no incentive, and reply to every review.
  5. Publish one page per trade and one per town, each with real projects, prices or ranges, and a short FAQ.
  6. Check whether your assistant mentions you for five or six questions a homeowner would ask, once a month.
